Tarquinia Tuscania
The excursion
Morning dedicated to visiting Tarquinia, one of the oldest Etruscan cities, whose history is linked, through the two Tarquin kings (Tarquinius Priscus and Tarquinius Superbus), to the most ancient events in the history of Rome, with which it was at war several times and by which it was finally subdued at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. We will explore the long Monterozzi hill, home to the main Etruscan necropolis, which is one of the most extraordinary archaeological complexes in the entire Mediterranean area due to the presence of hundreds of painted tombs, alongside the monumental princely mounds. In 2004 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Lunch at the farmhouse.
In the afternoon we will continue towards Tuscania, a town with a unique charm that stands on a hill, in a dominant position over the valley below. Its centuries-long history can be read in the numerous Etruscan and Roman tombs that are found in its territory, furthermore it is rich in sacred buildings dating back to the Romanesque period of particular importance and beauty, such as the imposing churches of San Pietro and Santa Maria Maggiore that we will visit.
