Caprarola - Sutri
The excursion
The morning is dedicated to visiting Caprarola, a village built on a spur more than five hundred metres above sea level, which has a peculiar urban structure based on a road system oriented along the axis of the ancient “Via Dritta”, the main street of the city, culminating in the square in front of the splendid Palazzo Farnese, the majestic residence of the Farnese family whose construction, designed by Antonio da Sangallo, was entrusted to Vignola starting from the third decade of the sixteenth century.
Lunch in a restaurant.
Transfer to Sutri to visit the charming village with remote origins, which hosts a large series of rock tombs from the 6th-4th century BC and the rock church of the Madonna del Parto (formerly an Etruscan burial ground and then a place of worship for the god Mithras), also carved into the rock, which houses the remains of primitive frescoes on its walls.
